Each time a major prize-giving event approaches, one notices a clamor for introducing fresh award types to recognize underappreciated efforts and fill the spirits of followers dedicated to specific genres.
My colleague has already made supporting a scary games classification. That would be fantastic. The same goes for strategy board titles, this being a dedicated supporter's campaign. But they will have to forgive me for pushing forward just as with other blinkered fanatics, I possess a compelling case for why my demand remains most pressing and significant. Here's the proposal: We need an award type for logic-based games.
The Genre Classification Challenge
Classifying creative works isn't exact; opinions vary greatly, and it will always spark debates and end in fuzzy definitions. This explains why movie academies avoid this approach. Yet it remains an unavoidable compromise in the world of interactive entertainment, which are so diverse it's challenging to consider them a single creative category.
For comprehensive acknowledgment of interactive entertainment excellence to receive acknowledgment, while allowing diverse titles to compete fairly, classification by type becomes crucial.
Present Award Structure
Leading game ceremonies offer these classifications covering Action-oriented games, Adventure-action titles, Role-Playing, Fighting, Sim/Strategy, and Sports/Racing games. Between them, these six categories actually cover a lot of ground, and you can find room accommodating various experiences.
Different situation exists for logic-based experiences. There’s simply nowhere for their placement. Examine these examples from outstanding current releases, showing diverse approaches: structural challenges from a specific release, fast-paced pattern recognition in a different title, and the sweetly sociological logic puzzles from additional release. Where could they possibly go between these six categories? Nowhere, that’s where.
Acknowledgment Issues
Many instances occur outstanding logic titles released every year lacking appropriate categories during gaming ceremonies, unless they happen to qualify classification types such as Mobile Game, Virtual reality experiences, or the intensely contested small studio competitions.
- An iconic brain-teaser received no recognition completely during that awards season
- Another imaginative release was excluded during that ceremony
- Well-received sorting experience got ignored recently
- Limited numbers of puzzle games managed to sneak into independent or mobile categories
Importance of Logic Titles
These are often compact experiences, yet the craft of the puzzle game holds tremendous importance. Famous handheld logic titles count as the most-played games in the world continuing this trend for many years.
The iconic tile-matching title competes with popular creative games competing to become most purchased experience; it’s also in the running for top gaming experience. Brain-teasers form essential building blocks within interactive entertainment, and they are in conversation with diverse game types.
The Solution and Justification
Logic titles wouldn't face such difficulty. It would be easy to populate multiple candidates engaging, different, qualified experiences each ceremony simply — or rather, with difficulty, given the need to exclude many worthy titles.
Restating the point, these represent titles that otherwise have no home in important events. Brain-teaser creators are working at the challenging frontier game development, creating some of the purest expressions of gaming itself. Just like movie stunt professionals, they deserve recognition. Let’s not keep them waiting decades.
