Fed Cuts Interest Rates for Second Instance This Year During Economic Uncertainty

The US central bank lowered borrowing costs on Wednesday, representing the second reduction in the current year during economic turbulence stemming from the government closure and tariff policies.

Decision Comes at Extraordinary Time for Central Bank

The decision to cut the key rate by a 0.25% to a range of 3.75% to 4% comes at an unprecedented moment for the Fed. The institution has been under significant strain to cut rates despite ongoing price increases.

Fed Statement Highlights Job Market Shifts

In a announcement, the Federal Reserve said that the jobless rate had increased but stays modest. “Employment growth have slowed,” the release reads. “Price increases has risen and stays moderately high.”

Government Shutdown Complicates Fed’s Job

The continuing federal government shutdown, now among the lengthiest in American history, has also hindered the central bank’s task. Gathering of important economic data has been suspended without a timeline as employees at the Bureau of Labor Statistics are furloughed during the closure.

Information Shortage Affects Monetary Moves

The Federal Reserve typically analyzes BLS data to determine labor market conditions, including the number of employment gains created to the market and the present unemployment rate. The last jobs report was released in the beginning of last month, before the closure, and gave a somewhat gloomy snapshot of the employment scene in the previous month.

The number of jobs created to the economy in the summer month was down by over 100k since the spring, and joblessness crept up to 4.3% – the peak since three years ago.

Private Data Show Ongoing Decline

Though the bureau was scheduled to release last month’s employment data in early October, it halted its publication once the shutdown started. Private payroll firm a leading payroll processor indicated earlier this month that the private sector cut thirty-two thousand positions in last month, a sign that the job market is continuing to slow.

“Supply as well as demand for labor has fallen significantly,” central bank head the Fed chairman stated recently, which he had earlier said stems from immigration and tariff policies.

Inflation Report Reveals Gradual Increase

Though BLS’s jobs report has been suspended, the agency still issued its inflation report for last month that showed that costs are going up, although slowly. Costs increased 3% over the past twelve months, the peak since January. In spring, the yearly price increase was two point three percent, the lowest it has been since 2021. The central bank’s goal price increase is two percent.
