EU Could Retaliate to ‘Unwarranted’ US Visa Bans, Official Says

The EU might “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it calls “unjustified” visa bans issued by the United States against five European individuals working on combating online hate and disinformation, an EU official has said.

EU Officials Condemn US Move as ‘Intimidation’

Officials from Europe such as Emmanuel Macron charged the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, after the travel bans targeted figures that were at the heart of efforts to introduce legislation governing US-based technology firms.

“For far too long, European activists have spearheaded organised efforts to coerce US companies to suppress US perspectives they oppose,” stated a senior US official in a social media post. “This government will not stand for these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”

Broad Criticism From EU Nations

Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives joined the French president in criticizing the decision.

The bans were imposed on Tuesday on a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s digital governance law, as well as four activists fighting false information, including Germany and the United Kingdom.

A Deepening Dispute Regarding Governance

This European legislation is seen by US officials as a form of censorship, whereas EU authorities argue the rules are essential to combat hate speech and falsehoods.

This row risks becoming a facet of a much broader existing political and ideological clash between the current US administration and European institutions.
